Baza was the main Roman town (called Basti) of the area and subsequently became ruled by the Moors. The town was conquered by Queen Isabella I after a long siege which started in 1489 and lasted for a year.
Due to its history, Baza is a treasure trove of architecture from the Roman and Moorish periods. It is also the main commercial centre with large supermarkets, shops and restaurants.
